CollegeNET Ends Lawsuit Against Embark.com; Offers $100,000 in Settlement Proceeds for Admissions Data Privacy Awards
Company Releases Study Commissioned for Court Arguments

CollegeNET, Inc. announced today that it has signed a settlement agreement with the former Embark.com ending litigation CollegeNET commenced against Embark in July, 2000. CollegeNET's
initial claims charged defamation and violations of the Lanham Act. Other claims cited lack of disclosure to university customers regarding solicitation of their applicants on behalf of other colleges and Embark'partners'.
As evidence for its case, CollegeNET planned to present in court a recent survey conducted by Rockbridge Associates examining the importance of vendor privacy policies to higher education admissions professionals. CollegeNET is now publicly releasing the results of this survey at

To encourage greater understanding of privacy issues for admissions professionals, CollegeNET is offering $50,000 each to the National Association of College Admissions Counselors (NACAC) and the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals (NAGAP) to underwrite annual "Data Privacy Leadership Awards." According to Paul Casey, director of corporate communications at CollegeNET: "Should NACAC and NAGAP accept our proposals, these organizations will each be able to give public and financial recognition to college admissions professionals who do the most over the next five years to extend privacy protection of student and family data in the college admissions process."
